Ellex to Launch New Ophthalmic Ultrasound Device
Ellex Medical Lasers Limited (ASX:ELX), a global leader in medical devices for the diagnosis and treatment of eye disease, today announced that it will launch a new addition to its diagnostic ultrasound portfolio at the 2016 congress of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS), 10-14 September, Denmark.
The Eye One™ is a portable ultrasound platform that provides full coverage of all ocular examination and measurement modes. The system offers the same power and precision imaging as Ellex’s industry-leading Eye Cubed™ ultrasound system, built into a compact, portable platform. Eye One™ is approximately two-thirds the size of Eye Cubed™ and 40% of the weight. It is designed for retinal specialists and cataract and refractive specialists, as well as the general ophthalmologist.
According to Ellex CEO, Tom Spurling, ultrasound continues to play a fundamental role in the diagnosis and monitoring of ophthalmic diseases and disorders and is a key revenue component for Ellex.
“Ultrasound revenue for the year ended 30 June 2016 was $10 million, up 18% on the prior corresponding period. Eye One™ is an important addition to our product portfolio that will drive growth in this current fiscal year.”
“Ultrasound remains one of the most essential imaging technologies available. It offers both qualitative and quantitative analysis, and is the only imaging technique that can be performed in the presence of opaque as well as clear media. It is also the perfect complement to our laser treatment technologies,” added Mr. Spurling.
Ellex has established the Eye Cubed™ as the industry’s preeminent ultrasound platform, with thousands of systems installed in hospitals and teaching institutions worldwide. With the introduction of the Eye One™, Ellex will expand its market reach to include physicians in private practice, for whom versatility and ease of transportation are considered increasingly important.
“Many of our ophthalmologist customers consult across multiple clinics or surgery centres. The ability to easily transport the Eye One™, whilst maintaining the entire functionality of its sister product the Eye Cubed™, is a huge draw card for these physicians. Indeed, this was the impetus behind the development of the Eye One™ platform,” added Mr. Spurling.
Ellex will display the new Eye One™ at the Ellex Exhibit #C216 during the ESCRS in Copenhagen.
