EURETINA 2013 to Host the European Launch of Ellex’s Rapide™ Pattern Scanning Photocoagulator
Ellex Medical Lasers Limited (ASX:ELX), a pioneer in ophthalmic laser and imaging technology, has announced the European launch of its Rapide™ Pattern Scanning Photocoagulator at the 13th EURETINA Congress taking place in Hamburg from 26-29 September 2013. Hosting retinal experts from around the globe, EURETINA offers an international insight into medical and surgical retina and presents the ideal launch platform for this breakthrough in retinal treatment technology.
More than 60 million people suffer from diabetes in the European Region with an expected increase in prevalence. In light of the burgeoning diabetes epidemic, pattern scanning has become an indispensable tool for the retinal surgeon
Following the recent CE mark and FDA clearance for the Company’s proprietary 2RT™ (Retinal Rejuvenation Therapy) for the treatment of diabetic eye disease (diabetic macular edema, DME), the Rapide™ Pattern Scanning Photocoagulator is a continuation of Ellex’s efforts in the fight against diabetic eye disease.
The benefits of pattern scanning technology
Pattern scanning lasers, which were first introduced in ophthalmology during the previous decade, represent a major advancement in the treatment of retinal disease. Not only do they save time for the physician and help to streamline patient flow, they also reduce treatment discomfort for the patient.
Pattern scanning technology uses millisecond pulse durations, which allows physicians to achieve the desired therapeutic effect whilst minimizing patient discomfort. These millisecond pulses dramatically reduce both vertical and horizontal thermal diffusion (especially to the choroid) of the laser energy. The result is targeted burns with minimal collateral damage to surrounding tissue, and a limited risk of macular edema.
Rapide™ Pattern Scanning Photocoagulator
Rapide™ has been developed specifically for the application of pattern scanning laser technology. Unlike other systems on the market, which have been adapted from conventional single-shot photocoagulation and provide limited precision, visibility and patient accessibility due to the use of external adapters, Rapide™ delivers more reliable – and faster – system performance.
Rapide™ is also the industry’s fastest pattern scanning photocoagulator. Featuring the latest generation of pattern scanning laser technology and equipped with two high-precision, high-speed galvanometers scanning at 4 KHz, Rapide™ allows physicians to deliver 2000 laser shots during PRP treatment in less than 7 minutes – including the time required to prepare the patient.
Rapide™ offers a multitude of patterns and pattern variations, including the option to set the pattern as an outline in aiming beam mode. This enables the physician to observe the laser-tissue effect during treatment. Rapide™ also allows physicians to perform treatment in single-shot mode.
