Ellex to Spotlight Latest Innovations in Ophthalmology at AAO 2012
Ellex Medical Lasers Limited (ASX:ELX), a leader in ophthalmic laser and imaging technology, today announced that it will host a series of educational presentations at the Ellex Speaker Central during the 2012 annual meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) in Chicago.
Taking place at the Ellex Exhibit #3804 from Saturday, 10 November through to Monday, 12 November, the Ellex Speaker Central will feature insight from the industry’s leading experts, including James H Johnson, MD, Vitreous Floater Solutions, Irvine, USA.
Dr. Johnson, an expert in the treatment of floaters, will highlight the latest advancements in Nd:YAG laser-based floater treatment. This coincides with the launch of the new Ellex Ultra Q™ YAG laser with Reflex Technology™, optimized for the treatment of both anterior and posterior YAG laser treatments.
Among the other innovations to be presented include the role of macular function testing in retinal disease diagnosis and management. Leading retinal specialist Neil F. Notaroberto, Medical Director of EyeCare 20/20, Louisiana, USA, will highlight the importance of measuring retinal sensitivity in order to identify patients who fail to respond to anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) therapy, and in assessing the visual outcomes of focal laser-treated diabetic macular edema (DME) patients.
“Macular function testing offers a highly specific method of identifying the true visual function of a patient’s retina, which may otherwise be missed if conventional tests alone are used,” said Dr. Notaroberto.
The Ellex Speaker Central at AAO 2012 will also provide an opportunity for Ellex to spotlight the introduction of Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) for its leading Eye Cubed™ diagnostic ultrasound system.
Available as an optional upgrade, the DICOM license allows the Eye Cubed™ to seamlessly interface with a number of imaging and/or Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems, improving workflow and enhancing practice management.
According to Ellex Clinical Applications Specialist and experienced echographer Nancy London, ROUB, CBOS, DICOM conformance will help Eye Cubed™ customers manage patient diagnosis with much more efficiency, saving valuable clinic time and reducing the risk of errors.
“It will enable the scan images to be transferred to the clinic’s EMR system at the end of the day for storage or review by the referring physician.”
The introduction of DICOM conformance for the Eye Cubed™ represents a significant milestone in Ellex’s ultrasound development program, which accelerated in 2011 following the consolidation of Eye Cubed™ ultrasound manufacturing to the Company’s state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Adelaide, Australia. This initiative resulted in the centralization of design engineering and production of the Eye Cubed™, providing improved operational efficiencies and greater speed-to-market.
The Ellex AAO 2012 Speaker Central will take place at the Ellex Exhibit #3804. Participation is open to all AAO delegates and onsite registration is available. To preview the presentation schedule, visitwww.aao.ellex.com
